Microsoft Forefront
With the new Microsoft Campus Agreement, UT is now licensed to offer Forefront Client Security to Faculty and Staff. With the Agreement, licensing can be leveraged to save the University a considerable amount of money over the current McAfee antivirus contract. Although the McAfee contract is set to expire the summer of 2010, Students and Macintosh users can continue to download McAfee free of charge. Linux users can request a copy of McAfee’s antivirus or choose the product that would be best in your application.
Forefront is Microsoft’s malware protection product that helps guard against threats, such as spyware, root kits, viruses, worms, and Trojans. Forefront achieved the ICSA Labs Certification, VB100 award, and West Coast Labs’ Checkmark Certification, meeting key criteria for protection against malware. Forefront was also named a finalist for the Info Security 2008 Global Excellence in Anti- Malware Solution. Additionally, Forefront is supported on Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2. In the recent “budget crunch” we are continually seeking new ways to improve services while reducing costs. Most antivirus vendors are now offering free versions of their products; OIT plans to embrace this and begin offering assistance for many of those products—supporting the choice for your preferred antivirus solution.
In transitioning from the McAfee contract to taking full advantage of existing licensing, the network registration process and antivirus website was updated to present Faculty and Staff the new Microsoft Forefront Client. The switch from McAfee is planned for June 30th, 2010. During this time, your McAfee client will continue to receive the latest protections.
