The BETA version of the ProActive Network Scanner: SNAP is now available for those who wish to try it. It does require NetID authentication.

If you would prefer to request a security scan rather than use SNAP, feel free to send the following information to security@tennessee.edu:

  • System Name (name.utk.edu)
  • System IP Address (160.36.X.X)
  • Your Name
  • Contact Information

When requesting a scan, please remember the following:

  • Requests will only be honored for the system owner. If you would like to report a system that appears to be attacking one you own or administer, please send the above information along with system logs or any other information you think we would find useful to abuse@utk.edu.

  • We can not scan systems not on the university's network. If your IP Name does not end in "utk.edu" or "tennessee.edu" we will NOT be able to scan it. Likewise, scanning systems connected via university-provided ERA accounts is not advisable.

  • For maximum efficiency and information return, it is advised to either disable host-based firewalls for the duration of the scan or create a rule allowing ISO systems access. If you have a host-based firewall, we recommend you also include in your scan request a date and time for the scan to be run so the window in which your system will not be protected will be as small as possible. Be advised that the ISO will need to be able to contact you PRIOR to running the scan to ensure the proper access is allowed.

  • Scans of this type will only cover TCP and not UDP or ICMP. You will only receive a general response indicating that your system appears secure or that it needs to have various services or ports investigated or disabled. If you would like a more in-depth scan and report on your system(s), it is recommended that you request a formal assessment.
